Greene's Grocery Mural - 2020

Art in the Community Mural (A Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee Project)

A few years ago, the Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee (KSB) began a community-wide beautification project of wrapping the eight (now nine) traffic signal boxes throughout the city. This project added both color and beauty to an otherwise uninteresting gray/silver traffic control box. This project is well-received by residents and the community alike.

In late-December/early January, the KSB Committee and staff met with Adam Davenport https://www.davenportstudios.com). Adam hails from Louisiana, but now resides in the Austin area, and is well known for his versatility in realism and portraiture. Adam painted a mural on the north side (southbound side) of the Northwest Plumbing Building at 109 N. Saginaw Blvd (next to RaceTrac). Did you know that the Northwest Plumbing Building was once the home to the original Saginaw Texas Fire Station? It’s true! KSB selected a historic Fire Department photo (taken about 50 years ago) as the idea behind the mural.

More recently, the KSB Committee and staff again met with Adam Davenport on another mural project. This mural is being painted on the north side (southbound side) of JR’s Café, which is the original home of Greene’s Grocery. The project should be completed in late-June.

At the May 19, 2020 City Council Meeting, the Saginaw City Council approved funding for this mural.  Adam began work on this project on June 11 and he completed the work in the wee hours of June 17.  Take a look at these photos...or better yet, stop by JR’s Cafe, take a look in person, then enjoy some delicious food from the Cafe!
