Will the information collected be confidential? YES
It is against
the law to publish or disclose any private information that identifies an
individual or company. Names and addresses are removed from the database. You will not be asked your Social Security Number.
How
does my information remain confidential?
Every Census Bureau worker takes an oath for life to
protect the confidentiality of Census responses. Failure to do so
results in a fine of $250,000 and/or up to five years in federal
prison. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share an individual’s
answers with anyone, including the IRS, FBI, welfare or immigration
agencies.
The
Census Bureau also uses electronic disclosure limitation procedures
to protect an individual’s confidentiality by screening out data
that might identify a specific individual or business.
Who enforces the confidentiality requirement?
The Census Bureau has an internal Disclosure Review
Board. The Board sets the confidentiality rules for all data product
releases. A Check-list approach is used to ensure that potential
risks to the confidentiality of the data are considered and
addressed before any data are released.
