It is with both happiness and regret for our department in announcing the retirement of Fire Captain Darrell Gilbert. Captain Gilbert is scheduled to retire on July 30th and on that date will have faithfully served the citizens of Saginaw for 33 years and 10 months.
Captain Gilbert started with the City as a police officer in 1985 after serving as a law enforcement officer for both the City of Odessa and the Ector County Sheriff’s Office for approximately 5 years. After a year of serving the City as a police officer he transferred to the fire department.
Captain Gilbert was officially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in October of 1995 and promoted to the rank of Captain in November of 2017. Throughout his tenure with the department Captain Gilbert has been integrally involved with or managed every aspect of our department’s operation and service to the community.
“Captain Gilbert’s experience and dedication will be truly missed and his departure will leave a void that you just can’t recover from quickly. When he started we had 1 paid firefighter per shift as opposed to the 8 per shift we have today and over his 33 year fire service career he has played a major part in the evolvement of our department to the admirable organization that it is today. He is likely the most reliable employee our city has ever had only missing two scheduled duty shifts in 33 plus years of employment. That is commendable beyond any words. I have the greatest level of respect for him and will greatly miss his leadership within our department” states Fire Chief Doug Spears.
